Coupling between satellite dwarfs and the Milky Way warp

چکیده

The perturbations of satellite galaxies, in particular the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), have been repeatedly proposed and discounted as the cause of the Milky Way warp. While the LMC may excite a wake in the Galactic dark matter halo that could provide sufficient torque to excite a warp of the observed magnitude, its orbit may be incompatible with the orientation of the warp’s line of nodes. The Sgr dSph galaxy has an appropriately-oriented orbit, and due to its closer orbit may produce a stronger tidal effect than the LMC. Evidence that Sgr may be responsible for the warp comes from its orbital angular momentum, which has the same magnitude as the angular momentum of the warped component of the Galactic disk and is anti-aligned with it. We have run high resolution numerical N-body simulations of Sgr-sized satellites around a Milky Way-sized disk to test this idea. Preliminary results suggest that Sgr-sized satellites can indeed excite warps with properties similar to that observed for the Milky Way .

The Observed and Predicted Spatial Distribution of Milky Way Satellite Galaxies

We review evidence that the census of Milky Way satellites similar to those known may be incomplete at low latitude due to obscuration and in the outer halo due to a decreasing sensitivity to dwarf satellites with distance. We evaluate the possible impact that incompleteness has on comparisons with substructure models by estimating corrections to the known number of dwarfs using empirical and t...

Determining orbits for the Milky Way’s dwarfs

We calculate orbits for the Milky Way dwarf galaxies with proper motions, and compare these to subhalo orbits in a high-resolution cosmological simulation. We use the simulation data to assess how well orbits may be recovered in the face of measurement errors, a time-varying triaxial gravitational potential and satellite-satellite interactions. For present measurement uncertainties, we recover ...

This paper describes a method for determining the dynamical interaction between extended halo and spheroid components and an environmental disturbance. One finds that resonant interaction between a galaxy and passing interlopers or satellite companions can carry the disturbance inward, deep inside the halo, where it can perturb the disk. Applied to the Milky Way for example, the LMC and SMC app...

Sdss Survey for Resolved Milky Way Satellite Galaxies Ii: High-velocity Clouds in the Early Data Release

In this paper, we limit the stellar content of 13 high-velocity clouds (HVCs; including 1 compact HVC) using the detection limits of a new survey for resolved Milky Way satellite galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (EDR). Our analysis is sensitive to stellar associations within the virial radius of the Milky Way that are up to 50× fainter than the faintest known Milky Wa...

Hundreds of Milky Way satellites? Luminosity bias in the satellite luminosity function

We correct the observed Milky Way satellite luminosity function for luminosity bias using published completeness limits for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR5. Assuming that the spatial distribution of Milky Way satellites tracks the subhalos found in the Via Lactea ΛCDM N-body simulation, we show that there should be between ∼ 300 and ∼ 600 satellites within 400 kpc of the Sun that are brighter ...
